For some, it’s like adding a crack team of ace deal-closers who contribute directly to the bottom line. For others, it’s like hiring a surly, inattentive sales clerk who sends customers fleeing for the virtual door.
One example on the plus side: Live chat on the LaptopMD+ web site nabs three or four extra customers a day, or about 10 percent of total customer volume, figures Alex Mouravskiy, who works in online marketing for the Manhattan-based computer repair company.
Mr. Zilberman owns a computer-services firm with 10 full-time employees and a video-equipment rental company that employees two full-time.

Scratching or damaging your screen is easier than you might think. If you carry your phone in your purse, backpack or pocket with change or keys, the screen “can easily get visible scratches from [those] hard surfaces,” which can “weaken the integrity of the original display and cause cracks more easily,” said Arthur Zilberman, president of tech repair company Laptop MD.
You can find laptop cases and sleeves in various materials, including neoprene, plastic, leather and nylon. Plastic hardshell cases, on the other hand, may be the most durable, but they’re generally only available for specific models, which makes them harder to shop for, says Zilberman.

Society is changing. Arthur Zilberman, owner of Manhattan-based LaptopMD+, says that in 2010, he noticed a steady decline in the number of customers who needed their laptops serviced. “It wasn’t a mass exodus, but the lower number of customers was notable,” Zilberman says, who was at first stumped by the drop-off in business.
Most laptop users who aren’t taking their computers into extreme conditions can get away with using a laptop sleeve. “Sleeves are great when you don’t need maximum protection, but simply an insulation against bumps and scrapes within a larger bag,” says Matt Ham, of LaptopMD+ and Jersey Laptop Repair. “They’re light, not bulky, and they come in plenty of sizes to be formfitting.”
